Hydraulic computer models are used worldwide in the evaluation and management ofwater distribution systems. East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) ofOakland, California, performs detailed hydraulic modeling to analyze its waterdistribution system to assist in determining cost-effective solutions for designand planning applications. EBMUD developed the Hydraulic Modeling System (HMS)and Land Use Demand Tool (Demand Tool) in conjunction with a consultant to cost-effectively perform long-range and short-range planning, improve operations andmaintenance, and optimize system improvements. This paper describes theintegration of existing distribution system data into the hydraulic model, thevarious uses of both HMS and the Demand Tool, and the District wide cost savingsresulting from the portability of the models from one modeling application toanother.
