The following paper describes the practices EPCOR Water Services exercises to develop and maintain hydraulic models. The benefits of a current and accurate model include the ability to identify areas for operational efficiencies and capital improvements. Current data is essential in developing a representative model. Information collection involves communication with EPCOR's geographic information system (GIS) and utility information system (UIS) groups. The detailed model is developed through the extraction of information from the GIS, UIS, and SCADA systems. Calibration is also an important factor of the validity of the hydraulic model. Operational details are used to ensure that the model reflects the actual system. Field programs for flow and pressure monitoring as well as pump speed tests are necessary to compare their results with results from model runs. The true test of the hydraulic model is its usefulness to users. Training of other casual model users is required to allow specialized analysis to be completed by other groups within EPCOR Water Services. Support to the users is provided through ongoing visibility of the core modeling team as well as the development of user guides relevant to various analytical applications. Includes tables, figures.
