The recent energy crisis in California has made more and more water utilities prioritize their network energy management because of the potential high-energy cost of network operation. This paper introduces an expert system called a Pump Scheduler that utilizes the SCADA system to optimize the network pump operation without relying on a computerized hydraulic model of the distribution network. The system can be easily deployed in any water utility that has a SCADA system to monitor its water distribution network. This paper focuses on a real time energy consumption benchmark and how to make the Pump Scheduler perform faster and smarter. Includes reference, tables, figures.
