This paper provides information that will benefit water utilities and municipalities by highlighting vulnerable points of utility information systems for cyber attack and by suggesting strategic planning for security improvements. Indeed, cyber attacks on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and other utility information systems have proliferated with the advent of the Internet, and research has shown that many SCADA systems are susceptible to hacking, which could result in disruption of water service to customers. The suggested improvements address enterprise network, billing system, and database security. Includes 3 references, figures.
