Thames Water has used the Internet for remote monitoring of rapid gravity filter plants. The data forms part of a wider research project into filter optimization. The Internet has enabled much closer monitoring of operation and water quality without the need for on-site attendance. The research scientists are increasingly working across a wide geographical area and therefore need mobile access to data. This paper briefly covers the filter optimization work and then discusses the manner in which the internet facility was setup, along with how as a result of the project the Internet is regarded as a key resource to support process optimization and asset management in a global water utility. Includes reference, figures.
