The capital city of the Sarawak State, Kuching City is a region rich in freshwater resources. However rapid urban growth is having a profound impact on the demand for water, itsdelivery and the physical environment. Currently, supply-side management characterizes theurban water provision in Kuching City. The concept of Water Demand Management (WDM) isnot well-established locally but remains an effective investment in sustainableuse of water resources. By utilizing the Wallingford Software model, InfoWorks WS (WaterSupply) is employed to carry out an in depth study of water demand patterns in the city froman end-use perspective, regarding the possibility of introducing Water DemandManagement components. InfoWorks WS provides a common platform to includeassessment of urban water issues, and integration of water supply and Water DemandManagement planning which is used as a practical tool for policy andinstitutional change. These efforts will be tied to water conservation programs in adjoiningurban areas, making appropriate improvements to meet the unique conditions of Kuchingcity. Includes 5 references, figures.
