This analysis of how pumping schemes were selected for three Canadian water supply systems includes a series of pump curves that indicate the comparative operating range and efficiency of the alternatives considered for each installation. Dual-speed, 2-winding motors, although somewhat more costly initially than constant-speed motors, met the specific pumping requirements of two systems so much more efficiently that the lifetime costs will be significantly reduced in terms of power demand. Constant-speed centrifugal pumps with a broad range of coverage were determined to be more efficient for an open water supply obtained from Lake Huron. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
