Since pumping accounts for some 90 percent of the energy consumed by many water utilities, the most efficient available pumping and storage options should be studied and implemented. In this article, the case histories of two Virginia water utilities are presented to exemplify the management of pumping operations through analysis and implementation of energy conservation measures. Keys to the identification and analysis of pump optimization are through understanding of the prevailing electric rate structure and reliable hydraulic performance data for pumping systems and individual pumps within the system. Energy conservation options include managing pumping combinations, altering operating concepts, renovating pumps, and replacing worn components. Includes tables, figures.
