In this study qualitative and quantitative determinations were made of nonvolatile chlorinated organics in chlorinated tap water. Quantitation of chloroform in the same water samples was also included in the study. A microwave plasma emission detector was used for gas chromatographic detection. Comparisons of chlorine-selective fingerprints showed that all of the major chlorinated organics found in tap water extracts were also produced from the chlorination of fulvic acid. In each sample tested, the combined concentrations of dichloroand trichloroacetic acids were significantly greater than the concentration of chloroform. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
