A study was sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and the New England Water Works Association to analyze the impact of acid precipitation on drinking water, as it affects the health of humans. This was done by sampling surface water and groundwater primarily in the New England states. Adverse effects on overall health were not found, although unadjusted aluminum content in a number of supplies could be a problem to patients on kidney dialysis. It can be assumed that the highly corrosive nature of New England waters is caused by acidic disposition in poorly buffered watersheds and aquifers. A system for classifying watersheds and aquifers in terms of calcite saturation index ratings is proposed. Includes 17 references, tables, figures.
