A modified jar test method for modeling settling basin behavior has been designed. It uses a hydraulic comparison equation sensitive to basin flow rates, water residence times, and flocculation dosages. When properly calibrated, it can reflect actual basin performance and detect problems or irregularities in the sedimentation basin prior to actual use. This technique should be applicable to any type of sedimentation basin as long as the hydraulic flow path can be approximated for calculation of realistic velocities and effective residence times. Incomplete settling allows turbid outflows to reach filters, shortening their runs and adding to water quality costs. Includes 4 references, figures.
