A study of Arizona's water system operator certification program was undertaken to develop guidelines for operator training and to prepare certification examinations that reflect the actual tasks and duties required of operators in the field. Information about training needs and certification procedures was collected from operators and managers through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study were incorporated into a manual prepared for the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). The knowledge and skills that Arizona operators are required to have for both water treatment and water distribution are accurately detailed in the manual. The study results will also prove useful in preparing training objectives, revising water treatment examinations, and drafting new exams. Secondary benefits include better communication with operators. State operator certification regulations and proposed programs are outlined. Includes table, figures.
