Brussels, Belgium, obtains much of its potable water supply from the River Meuse, which is heavily influenced by seasonal precipitation in the temperate climatic zone. The river is affected by human sewage, algal blooms, humic substances, and the infusion of hard groundwater. Chlorine dioxide is used at treatment plants, pumping stations, and clear water reservoirs along aqueducts for bacterial disinfection and to prevent trihalomethane (THM) production. Principles of the treatment schemes at these various facilities are detailed and a costbenefit analysis is offered. Includes 11 references, figures.
