Air stripping is a promising method for removing volatile organic solutes such as trihalomethanes (THMs) from water supplies. This article reviews design methods for surface aeration and for countercurrent packed columns, presents methods for estimating energy requirements to achieve chosen treatment objectives, demonstrates the efficiency of multiple staging of surface aeration basins, and compares the energy requirements for multiple-staged surface aeration versus countercurrent air stripping. It also demonstrates the risks of improperly neglecting the gas-phase transfer resistance when dealing with THM stripping. Includes 35 references, tables, figures.
