As a result of the growing trend within the United States to protect and provide in-stream flows, the states are adopting a variety of means to meet streamflow requirements. The most common methods are reservation of minimum streamflows, placing conditions on water use permits, and stream protection systems. In-stream flows may also be required as conditions of project authorizations, licenses, and administrative decisions. This article summarizes some of the state instream flow laws and a few of the federal provisions. Includes 16 references, table, figures.
