This article discusses the status of the use of polyethylene (PE) and polybutylene (PB) pipe by the water industry. Results of surveys of experience with the use of PE and PB pipe are described and indicate that plastic pipe performance is comparable to that of conventional materials. The majority of plastic pipe failures were linked to inadequate or improper installation practices. Proposed revisions and additions to standards for these types of pipe are presented. The question of the permeation of plastic pipe by hydrocarbon solvents is addressed and the conclusion is stated that the use of plastic pipe presents little risk in normal soils.
