This article examines the efficiencies of several oxidants, including chlorine (Cl2), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), potassium permanganate (KMnO4), and ozone (O3) in removing traces of five specific taste and odor organics (trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol (geosmin), 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), 2,3,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), 2isopropyl-3-methoxy pyrazine (IPMP), and 2-isobutyl-3-methoxy pyrazine (IBMP)) from drinking water. To derive conclusive indications of the efficiencies of the techniques studied, it was necessary to choose test conditions that were often extreme, i.e., wide ranges of dosages and contact times. The use of equivalent dosages instead of mass-volume dosages makes it possible to compare the oxidation potential of the oxidants. With the data reported in this article, however, it is easy to calculate the mass of oxidant needed to treat a specific water for the removal of organics. Includes 60 references, tables, figures.
