The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between optimum coagulant dose and optimum clarification rate in order to design a smaller, more efficient clarifier. The optimum coagulant dose produced a flocculant suspension containing a low total particle count, a floc with a large mean size, and a supernatant with a low count of small particles. The use of an electronic particle counter resulted in size distribution data that were an order of magnitude smaller than the actual size. This was attributed to floc breakup produced by the high fluid shear in the measuring aperture. Experiments were conducted using a modified jar-test technique. Includes 28 references, tables, figures.
