A five-year pilot-plant study at the Hackensack Water Company in New Jersey showed that coagulation, ozonation, and direct filtration could be used successfully to treat water from the Oradell Reservoir, producing a finished water with fewer dissolved solids and improved taste and odor. The proposed expansion of the Haworth Filtration Plant, using preozone treatment and direct filtration, will substantially reduce the use of alum, chlorine, and caustic soda. In addition, less sludge will be produced in the treatment process and sludge disposal will be less costly. Includes reference, tables.
