Fredericton, N.B., maintains 23 active wells that serve as the city's raw water source. Many of these wells have manganese concentrations far in excess of the 0.05 mg/L level recommended by the Canadian drinking water guidelines. An investigation showed that the wells could provide the city's drinking water if treatment for the removal of manganese was installed. After performing pilot studies, the city chose a chlorination-filtration system for removing the manganese. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
