Sequential air stripping and activated carbon adsorption were used for removing trichloroethylene (TCE) and carbon tetrachloride (CT) from a groundwater containing a high background level of organic carbon. Although both compounds were effectively removed by either process, TCE was more amenable to removal by adsorption, whereas CT was more amenable to removal by stripping. Background levels of organic carbon were found to significantly affect adsorption of both TCE and CT, reducing observed sorbent loadings. Includes 15 references, tables, figures.
