A full-scale study of the conversion of rapid sand filters to granular activated carbon (GAC) filter-adsorbers was conducted by the Water Research Center of Medmenham, UK, at the Church Wilne Water Treatment plant near Nottingham, England. The objectives were to identify the engineering problems associated with the change and to compare the costs and effectiveness of the GAC system with the rapid sand system. It was found that the GAC removed turbidity and residual coagulants as effectively as sand; the total organic carbon level was lower with GAC-filtered water; longer filter runs were achieved with GAC filters; and microorganisms of health significance were effectively removed by chlorination after gas treatment. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
