After completion of a long-term granular activated carbon (GAC) project, the US Environmental Protection Agency informed the Cincinnati Water Works about the possible formation of dioxins during carbon reactivation. This information prompted the utility to conduct an additional study on avoiding potential dioxin precursor materials and on evaluating a reactivation system capable of preventing adverse environmental emissions. This article describes the results of these studies for exhausting GAC in a postfiltration carbon contactor and reactivating GAC in a fluid bed reactivation system. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
