The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the mechanisms that are operative in ozone-induced particle destabilization. Both the nature of background dissolved organic matter and the nature of the particles themselves were investigated. It appears that commercial humic acid preparations and natural dissolved organic matter respond differently to ozonation. The analyses performed suggest that polymerization of metastable organics is the primary mechanism responsible for ozone-induced particle destabilization in a natural water-bentonite system. Includes 73 references, tables, figures.
