The susceptibility of alumina particles to ozone-induced destabilization in the presence of humic material and calcium was evaluated. It was observed that calcium increased susceptibility to ozone-induced colloid destabilization. The concentration of ozone required for particle destabilization is a function of the organic carbon concentration as well as the calcium concentration. Experiments without ozonation showed that suspensions with higher concentrations of calcium and lower concentrations of calcium or higher concentrations of humic material coagulate more readily than suspensions of lower concentrations of calcium or higher concentrations of humic material. Includes 36 references, table, figures.
