Utilities and dam owners should properly maintain dams and design repair programs to maximize the structure's service life. Bridgeport Hydraulic Company in southwestern Connecticut has undertaken a comprehensive renovation program to identify and schedule necessary repairs to each of its 21 concrete gravity dams, all of which were built in the early part of this century. Renovation efforts at two BHC dams are described, from initial investigatory work to final design and construction. Determination of the cause of concrete deterioration and of the general repair approach at each dam is discussed. In addition, the author summarizes the factors that affect which renovation approach is selected. Includes figures.
