Most currently regulated organic compounds found in drinking water are amenable to separation and measurement by gas chromatography. A new generation of compounds being proposed for regulation includes some that are not amenable to separation and measurement with this technique. The emerging analytical technology of liquid chromatographymass spectrometry is described and is considered a likely candidate for the separation and measurement of nonvolatile compounds in drinking water. Includes 18 references, table, figures.
