This study compared an immunofluorescence (IFA) method for the simultaneous detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in water to the zinc sulfate flotation and Lugol's iodine method. The results show that the IFA technique detected approximately 12 times more Giardia cysts in surface-water samples than the zinc sulfate method. In addition, Cryptosporidium was detected in several samples. The implications of parasite detection methodology are discussed in relation to the Surface Water Treatment Rule. Includes 45 references, tables.
