The Indianapolis Water Company conducted a thorough study of its reservoir supplies to assess the reliability of its water supply system. Although more than 10 percent of reservoir storage capacity had been lost over the years because of sedimentation, it was found that the amount of raw water available could be increased by almost one fourth if the available storage was fully utilized and the operational releases from the three reservoirs were coordinated. An ongoing monitoring and inspection program ensures that dams at two of the reservoirs remain structurally sound. The cost of retaining consultants to review storage volumes, dependable yields, and dam safety was estimated to be only 1 percent of the cost of constructing new sources of surface water supply.
