Although the initial degradation of effluent quality from a granular media filter has important implications for the design and operation of filters needed to produce extremely high quality water, this problem has not previously been investigated in depth. The mechanism responsible for the poor effluent appears to involve an interaction between the backwash stage and the initial stages of filtration, during which a degradative phase is followed by an improving phase. Includes 20 references charts graphs.
