In Denver, following more than 10 years of pilot study, a 44 L/s (1-mgd) treatment plant was constructed to further evaluate the most promising processes to convert unchlorinated secondary wastewater directly to drinking water quality. The purpose of the study reported here was to establish the safety of the water produced; to do this, the quality of the water from the reuse plant was compared to the quality of water provided to customers of the Denver Water Department. Most of the article is devoted to a description of the treatment process, particularly particulate removal, nitrogen removal, and removal of organics, inorganics, and pathogens. A number of tables compare treated water from the reuse plant to regulatory standards and to the quality of Denver's drinking water. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
