Numerous incidents of drinking water contamination resulting from permeation of organic chemicals in soil through water piping components have been reported in the United States and Europe. The authors of this article immersed samples of gasket materials in gasoline and solvents and exposed actual gasketed pipe segments to gasoline and solvents to determine the susceptibility of various gasket types to permeation. Water inside gasketed pipe segments was analyzed at regular time intervals for the presence of gasoline or solvent using gas chromatography. The gasket material was also analyzed to detect changes. The results of these exposure tests were used to estimate the concentration of contaminants in the pipe water resulting from permeation through the gasket materials. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
