The first project under the US Environmental Protection Agency's small systems technology initiative, which was designed to generate simpler treatment technologies for small systems, has been completed. At Quail Creek, located about 60 mi northwest of Austin, Texas, ion exchange was used to reduce radium concentrations in the well water. Although the project was successful, the authors caution that this technology may not be universally applicable to small systems because of certain site-specific advantages held by this system. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
