Many raw-water intakes in the Great Lakes are threatened by infestations of zebra mussels. Hydraulic testing and visual inspection of the intakes tend to be time-consuming and costly. The authors introduce an index (the damping ratio) that can be simply and inexpensively used to monitor the conditions of water intakes by signaling a change in flow resistance. The authors calculated some damping ratios and compared them with hydraulic data from drawdown tests. The results show that the damping ratio index has a direct relationship with the friction coefficient of the intake. Includes 5 references, table, figures.
