Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system technology--used by drinking water utilities to monitor and control remote facilities--has changed substantially in the past two to three years. This change has followed exponential advances in computer system performance, electronics, software, and standards. New SCADA systems, with their improved capacity for data management and communication with related systems, are a better bargain than previous SCADA systems. "Open systems," in which all components can communicate regardless of brand name, are a common goal for manufacturers and users. Communication standards for utilities associated with open systems, utilities communication architecture, is described, as is the implementation of a SCADA system by the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority. Includes 8 references, table, figures.
