A knowledge-based system (KBS) is useful as a management tool for crew scheduling and site preparation to enhance productivity of maintenance operations for a water distribution system. It aids in identifying tasks and their expected durations, precedence relationships, and requirements for materials, tools, and labor. A prototype KBS is developed that codifies knowledge from field experts for planning maintenance operations for a water distribution system. This case study from Hackensack (NJ) Water Company examines the influence of weather, traffic, leak severity, and the presence of other utility connections on planning repair operations for joint leaks. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
