Velocity gradient is an important parameter in the process of flocculation. Described here is an apparatus for measuring the velocity of water that is simple to operate, able to measure only the tangential velocity, sufficiently accurate to measure small fluctuations in velocity, small enough to have no significant effect on the flow pattern, and low in cost. Experimental use of the instrument indicates that the value of the drag coefficient is not constant, as has been assumed previously, but changes with the velocity gradient. Includes 17 references, figures.
