Through statistical analysis of flows in the Los Angeles aqueduct, this study determined that the addition of cationic polymers to provide in-line flocculation of suspended particulate matter also resulted in an average 3 to 4 percent reduction in carrying capacity of the aqueduct. This reduction of carrying capacity kept increasing for the duration of polymer addition and eventually led to substantial cutbacks in allowable inlet flow. Also covered are turbidity measurements and sedimentation in storage reservoirs, and copper sulfate addition. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
