In this study virus recovery efficiencies achieved by the tentative standard method (TSM) were generally poor. For enteroviruses the recovery ranged from 0.7 to 32 percent and averaged 16 percent during fifteen months of evaluation. The representative parvovirus was recovered with an average efficiency of only 5 percent; the representative reovirus and adenovirus were not recovered at all during nine months of evaluation. The average recovery efficiency of natural enterovirus mixtures obtained from raw sewage was 3.9 percent. Also discussed are adsorbents and granular activated carbon. Includes 30 references, tables, figure.
