Laboratory data have shown that algae biomass and extracellular products react readily with chlorine to form trihalomethanes (THMs). Furthermore, field data have implicated algal activity in a water supply reservoir as a potentially significant factor in exacerbating THM levels in the Fairfax County Water Authority supply in northern Virginia. If the evidence is borne out, the need for algae control in water supplies takes on new significance. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
