The removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) is one of the most important means of reducing total organohalide formation potential and bacterial regrowth in distribution networks. A nanofiltration operation in a Paris suburb, in use at industrial scale for more than a year, has proved an excellent technology to meet new guidelines for chlorine disinfection byproducts and to produce high-quality drinking water. In the laboratory, amino acids and sugars were identified as the main organic constituents of the permeate, which is low in DOC, BDOC, and total organic halide precursors. Includes 25 references, tables, figures.
