A primary objective of the research compiled in this article was to determine the feasibility of treating a central Illinois surface water with an ultrafiltration (UF) process combined with powdered activated carbon (PAC) pretreatment. Water quality and operational parameters were monitored during a four-month pilot study. A second objective was to optimize two of the operating parameters for the PAC-UF pilot system: backwashing interval and permeate flux. Statistical techniques were used to derive efficiency trends as a function of these parameters. The authors also tracked trends in cost efficiency and energy efficiency. The research methods and results are discussed within the article. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
