Protecting the quality of water delivered to consumers requires protecting the distribution system. An important facet of this protection is disinfection of new mains. This work sought to assess the level of microbial loading (measured by heterotrophic plate count) on new mains. The results, combined with information on sensitivity of the indigenous organisms to disinfectants, may assist in the development of appropriate guidelines for disinfecting new mains. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
