Contamination of drinking water treatment chemicals, the presence of foreign matter, and delivery problems can affect drinking water quality, treatment plant reliability, regulatory compliance, and residual handling and disposal practices. A survey was conducted of the groundwater and surface water facilities of the American Water Works Company Inc., as they pertained to treatment chemicals. The goal of this study was to detail treatment chemical issues and identify areas for improvement that will reduce the consequences associated with treatment chemical problems. The application of simple procedural recommendations in the areas of treatment chemical inventory, chemical bid specification, pre-unloading procedures and testing, and periodic specialty testing can all help improve the reliability of service and the quality of drinking water. Includes 38 references, tables, figures.
