This study was undertaken to determinehow common operating conditions, such as regular backwashing, would affect bromate removal andhow operation of a filter for bromateremoval might affect downstream issues, such as distribution system regrowth. This study found that bromate, a regulated compound, is reducedto bromide in a biologically active carbon(BAC) filter and that aerobic biodegradabilityof natural organic matter was notincreased following low dissolved oxygen(DO) BAC filtration. The study alsoshowed that operating conditions mayaffect the extent of bromate removal in aBAC filter and that disturbances in typicaloperating conditions (high DO and soforth) may impair the filter's performancefor future bromate removal. With thesefindings in mind, treatment plants can carefullyconsider BAC filter startupconditions - the authors emphasize theimportance of the fact that filter startupconditions can affect the filter's performance. In addition, the authors recommendthat plants perform site-specific bench-scalestudies with granular activated carbon andwater of interest so that appropriate operationalfilter parameters can be chosen.
