This article discusses how small community and nontransient-noncommunity water systems, expecting to have difficulties complying with the revised federal drinking water standard of 10 ug/L by January 23, 2006, may find some hope and help in two new documents from the US Environmental Protection Agency. In both a report to Congress and draft implementation guidance released in March, the agency has laid out its plans to help roughly 3,400 small systems that are expected to face compliance challenges find the regulatory flexibility and financial and technical resources needed to meet or beat the tougher new maximum contaminant level (MCL) no later than January 23, 2015 - 14 years after promulgation. Includes table, figure.
