Despite years of research, the mechanisms by whichmicroorganisms survive in distribution systems and howvarious water quality parameters affect their survival arestill not fully understood. Several factors affect bacterialregrowth in drinking water supplies. Although biodegradableorganic materials, the "food" for bacteria, have often beenthought to be a main culprit, this study shows that may not bethe case. By evaluating the biological quality in a full-scalechloraminated distribution system, this study examined thevarious factors that affect bacterial regrowth. The conclusions ofthis study are likely to help utility managers gain a better understandingof the factors controlling bacterial regrowth and helpthem make well-informed decisions on treatment processimprovement or distribution system maintenance. For example, rather than merely reducing the concentration of biodegradableorganic matter, utilities may need to take multiple approaches tomaintain good biological quality or to solve existing problems intheir distribution systems.
