The Cheng Ching Lake Water Works treatment facility insouthern Taiwan experienced customer complaints abouthardness and tastes and odors in the finished water.Although the facility used conventional treatment methods, customerscontinued to complain. To remedy the situation, theauthors studied treatment methods to complement the existingconventional treatment processes. Treatments studied includedozone, granular activated carbon (GAC), softening, and membraneprocessing. The best water quality was obtained with an integratedmembrane treatment process. Results of the study alsoshowed that avoiding prechlorination significantly improved thebiostability of finished water. Includes 19 references, tables, figures.
