Water suppliers may be familiar with small-scale aquiferstorage and recovery projects but typically are unaware ofthe potential for using large-scale groundwater storageprojects as an alternative to construction of new surface watersupply reservoirs. Jones examines the demonstrated feasibility ofimplementing large-scale groundwater storage projects, and theinfrastructure and institutional arrangements needed for theirimplementation.Large-scale groundwater storage projects have been successfullyimplemented in California. Access to preexistingregional water conveyance infrastructure providing a source ofimported water is a key factor enabling many of these projects.Among other western states, only Arizona and Nevada nowhave projects similar in scope to those in California. However, state financial assistance provided to local agencies implementinggroundwater storage projects is encouraging developmentof new projects. By giving consideration to groundwaterstorage alternatives in long-range master planning, utilitiescan preserve their ability to implement such projects in thefuture.
