The new US Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA) maximum contaminant level for arsenic indrinking water (10 ug/L) will require many waterutilities, especially small systems, to add unit operationsfor arsenic removal. This has created an immediateneed to find cost-effective methods for removingarsenic. A recent study conducted on groundwater inrural Colorado explored using modified coagulation/filtration(MCF) as an arsenic removal technique.MCF has been designated by USEPA as a best availabletreatment. However, many previous tests forarsenic removal using this method have used carefullyprepared solutions. The aim of this study was to determinethe operating conditions and limitations of MCFfor removing arsenic from real groundwater. Theresults from the Colorado study were then comparedwith the predictions obtained from earlier investigationsusing carefully prepared solutions. These studyresults add to a growing body of evidence that suggestsferric ion coagulation followed by filtration (eithersand or microfiltration) can be a cost-effective methodfor arsenic removal.
